  • MySQL5 as development system and exporting from it

For the last couple of weeks now I've been using MySQL5 for my local development system. Since I really enjoy using the latest stable releases (and sometimes unstable to pre-beta ;)) going with MySQL5 was a logical choice. But this also comes with a small problem: The compatiblity mode of mysqldump. Have you every exported a table that has a key with auto incrementation from a MySQL5 database and tried to import it into something < MySQL5? Fun ;) If you export it right away and ignoring the whole compatiblity settings you are nearly guaranteed to get an error message about the collation/charset settings appended to each tables DDL-statement (and if you're lucky also something about some incompatible functions or datatypes).

  • Introducing my BooksBlog

As I've indicated in some other posts, I intended to split the content a little bit to keep this weblog more focused on tech and development related topics. For this reason I've now created a new weblog focused on books where I've already put everything book-related that I've posted here.

  • Bulletproof Web Design

Honestly, it was more a spontanuous idea to get this book somewhen around Christmas 2005 but judging from my previous experience with Dan Cederholm's books I thought it couldn't hurt also reading his newest guide through the deep and vivid jungle of CSS based web design. Before I get to the main part of the review, I want to talk a little bit about how I got this book first:

Normally I buy all my books on amazon.de simply because it's fast, easy and cheap. First of all I went to the .com site (don't ask me why) and found out that they want something around 22$ for it. Sure I said and made myself and my bank account ready for a small investment. Since toll sucks I went to .de and ... nearly fell from my chair: 47.90EUR!!! Ok, so I went to the website of a local bookstore and was quite suprised when I saw the same book for "only" 39.60EUR. Still about twice as expensive as on amazon.com but since I would pay nearly the other half thanks to toll and would have to wait a few weeks I asked my mom to drop by there and get my a copy (was at work at that time). Can someone please explain to me, why I have to pay twice as much for the same book here compared to what it costs on the other side of the ocean (the left one)?

  • Things I'm missing on Newsvine

First of all thanks to Natalie Jost for inviting me to Newsvine.com, that new news site nearly everyone out there is talking/writing about.

Since I've got that invitation I think last sunday, Newsvine has become my primary source for let's call it the traditional news which is for me basically everything that's not coming from a blog or a bulletin board ;) It's simply a great way to get everything from one source and thanks to the quite international community in there you also get very international news (for example I think there were at least 2 articles about Austria there today ;)).

  • Opera's new widgets system

Today the technical preview 2 of Opera9 has been released and since I quite like Opera and am really looking forward to every new release I downloaded it right after reading about it. But Opera9 doesn't only come with directly browser released features it also has a new widget system integrated which is somehow comparable to what Apple has with the dashboard or Yahoo with the Yahoo! Widget Engine which is also my problem with it: I don't really see the need for yet another widget system. Sure, it's probably using the Merlin rendering engine of Opera9 which at least looks great so far btw. :D

  • Partially down

If you're reading this, you've probably accessed my weblog directly through weblog.zerokspot.com, which still works. Thanks to some maintainance the server that is hosting zerokspot.com is currently unavailable and will be hopefully back online somewhen tomorrow morning (GMT+1). In the meantime I've set a domain redirect for zerokspot.com to point to weblog.zerokspot.com so that you don't get one of these nasty time-out screens. It will take some time for the DNS server out there to pick that up so I apologize for any problems you might have in the meantime.

  • Planing for EuroOSCON 2006

Since I first saw the link on the O'Reilly conference page for this years EuroOSCON I've been planing a little bit... ok, it's more like just thinking how cool it would be to get to Brussels once again :) When I was there back then in 2004 it was right after starting the journey which should lead me also through the Netherlands as well as northern Germany, but honestly: Brussels was by far the most international city/town/whatever I've seen until then in my whole life. I can't really tell why since, you know, all those big cities in Europe like Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Amsterdam and so on are all quite international. But somehow in Brussels everything mixed and blend together in its somehow unique way, so I'm really looking forward to getting a chance experiencing this atmosphere once again :)

  • Star Trek: New Frontier - After the Fall

Long time no read, Mr. David. Seems like Peter David thought so too and made a nice little jump in his great book series about the adventures of Captain Calhoun and the crews of the USS Excalibur and USS Titan. In fact the storyline of the latest installment of the "New Frontier" series is situated about 3 years after the events of "Stone and Anvil". Much has happened since then. For example Shelby is now an admiral, and Kebron is now a counselor ... I won't tell you much more here since part of the whole joy of reading this book came from getting to know the new-old crew, what has changed, and what not.

  • Again new books on the horizon...

There are once again some new books on the horizon for me :)

    • "Daedalus" by Dave Stern
    • "Worlds of Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Cardassia and Andor"
    • "The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman

The last one in this list is actually something completely new for me. Normally I don't just look into a genre and take a book that got good reviews, but here I go. I also don't want to bore you only Star Trek books ;) This was also the book that took me the longest to put into my shopping cart since I couldn't decide whether or not I should get the german translation since this would have been 3 or 4 EUR cheaper. But just a few days ago I thought about this whole "getting translations" thing and decided for myself, that I would only then buy a translation of a book, if I simply see now chance of understanding it with or without a dictionary ... which actually means, that I will try to get books written by English, French or German authors in the original versions.

  • Metal Gear ACID! == Black hole for free time

It's been rather quiet here for the last couple of days and I have to disappoint you: I have not done anything really useful to save mankind or things like that. All I did was play Metal Gear ACID! basically all the time since I had the last exam for this semester. Damn, I even have a MGA wallpaper now as my desktop's background image ... Anyway, there were definitely some things planed for this weekend before I started playing ACID:
