Some Flickr alternatives

Every once in a while it's good to take a look what alternatives to a service you use and like very much. So given the current Microsoft/Yahoo-dicussions, I thought it was once again time to look at some of the "alternative" photo communities out there: Smugmug, Zooomr, 23hq,
Fotocommunity and ipernity. I didn't really try most of these services but just looked at their feature-set to see if they offered what I need. Also don't expect a complete comparison off these sites here, since this would probably easily fill a 20 pages article. I just want to point out a few things I've noticed.

So let's get started.

wow! tnx for the overview!

It's a pity that you forgot the "real" Flickr alternative, Ipernity.

It offers nearly the same features as Flickr + some nice extra features:

  • a weblog
  • uploading of any files
  • profile page is fully customizable
  • audio uploads
  • video of course…

They also have free and pro accounts where the free account isn't that restrictive in the amount of photos as Flickr's (I mean the 200 photos limit in the stream).

I highly recommend to at least have a look at it.

Greetings

Ah nice :-) Perhaps I can find the time to look into it today or tomorrow and add it to this comparison.

after having being banned for really DUMB reasons from Flickr, after near 3 full years of Pro account and 1 of "basic" account ... I am now seeking for an alternative ...

I was near to go "self hosted" but you showed me Ipernity ... I will have a look at it right away ...

Thanks for the article, anyway :-D
