Eivind Hjertnes has now a page on Stationery.Pizza where he lists all the pens and inks he’s currently using. I’ve wanted to do something similar for a really long time but couldn’t yet decide if I wanted to be integrated with FountainpenCompanion.com or not 🤪

I guess I should just do the static approach first and iterate if necessary…

Looks like Hive, one of the apps/networks that are currently trying to catch everyone who jumps off the Twitter whale, is having some huge security holes, making pretty much all data accessible. Zerforschung took a look and now posted on warning on their website.

After all these months Elon Musk seems now at the point where he’s taking control over Twitter and despite the long preparation time the whole thing seems to be chaotic, to put it mildly. As for me, I’m not yet sure if I’ll keep my account there and if so then in what way. This all just feels bad to me and I cannot put the finger on what actually feels the worst…

Since there was no announcement in any of the recent Nintendo Directs, some people suspected that the port of Nintendo’s Advance Wars 1 and 2 games might have been silently cancelled after officially having been delayed due to the war in Ukraine. Stephen Totilo asked Nintendo and it looks like the game wasn’t cancelled 😀 but a new release date hasn’t been determined yet 😩

Wouter Groeneveld has posted a great look at the Nutri-Score system. I never took the time to look into the actual calculation of that score but I was kind of already assuming that it was be rather worthless due to experience with other/similar systems. I also wholeheartedly agree with the suggested approach to just look at the ingredients of a product instead of relying on any “score”.

Vulnerability management for Go

The Go team just announced that there is now an official vulnerability database and tooling around that for Go. The database can be browsed through https://pkg.go.dev/vuln/ and there is also a new CLI with govulncheck which should help developers detect known vulnerabilities in their code.

Recently, Adam and Jerod of the Changelog interviewed Ben Ubois, author of Feedbin, first of all about Feedbin itself. Eventually, they also chatted about the broader topic of RSS and continuous resurrection of that format over the last decades.

There I also learnt about the PodcastIndex project which tries to collect metadata about podcasts in an open way 🙂

Similar to SemVer.org there is also a page for calendar-based versioning or CalVer. Unlike that other page this one does not provide a clear recommendation or specification but focuses on how other projects are using dates in their versioning strategy.

I personally especially like those little shield-badges that show what part of a version is used for the date and what for other elements!

Turns out that page has been there for a long time but I simply didn’t know about it 😅

Actress Nichelle Nichols—who made history with her portrayal of Nyota Uhura on Star Trek: The Original Series—died Saturday, July 30, at the age of 89. Her son Kyle Johnson announced Nichols’ passing on her official Instagram account, saying his mother had died of natural causes.

Today, the Prime Minister of the UK has finally pulled the plug and resigned … at least as head of the Conservative Party and has also announced that there won’t be any new policies until a successor has been found. Will that change the country and perhaps also somehow act more cooperatively regarding the agreement with the EU about Brexit? No idea but, honestly, I doubt it.

For the time being, I’m enjoying the commentary by @Number10cat and the tunes associated with political crisis in the UK…

While I absolutely love that there’s going to be another physical CCC this year, I had hoped it would still be in Leipzig. I had lots of fun in Hamburg at the CCH but Leipzig allowed the event to be much more open and less overcrowded. Not that this is going to stop me from getting a ticket and having some fun during the winter holidays 😅

The local Media Markt right now has a pre-order list where you pay €300 upfront and then get a bundle including Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 for €658 this month! I thought for not even a second and just pre-ordered it! This is still a bit of a premium price since I could get both games cheaper right now (and I actually don’t care about GT7) but I’m just too happy that my long wait might eventually be over in 2-3 weeks 😍

I guess I should now finalise the list of stuff I want to get right away with my shiny new PS5 🤪

terminal-is-not-fully-functional

After updating tmux and zsh last week, I started to see some weird errors like the one below:

WARNING: terminal is not fully functional

This seems to be caused by /usr/bin/less using an old ncurses version which lacks some color profiles. To fix this I’ve now installed less from Homebrew and configured Git to use that instead

brew install less
git config --global core.pager "/usr/local/bin/less -FX"

tmux and zsh updates

Pro tip: Do not update zsh while having tmux active with like 10 sessions and lots of panes in each. The result was non-functioning sessions with just blank prompts.

The GopherCon organizers just sent out a mail informing the community that the event that was planned for September at the Dolphin Resort in Orlando has been rescheduled to October 6-8 at the Marriott Marquis at McCormick Place in Chicago!

As you are likely well aware, on Monday, March 28th, Governor DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education Act, dubbed the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, and on April 14th, a law banning abortion at 15 weeks was enacted. In light of these recent events, Gopher Academy can no longer support the notion of convening in Florida. While the financial and legal repercussions are still unclear, we feel a strong moral and ethical obligation to ensure that the location of GopherCon aligns with the values of our community.

Lounge of the partially reconstructed Hindenburg

One thing that absolutely fascinated me about the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen is that they have rebuilt a large part of the passenger area of the airship LZ 129 Hindenburg!

In the picture above you can see the lounge and behind the wall at the end of the room is a “writing room” complete with postbox. Turns out that they had their own postal service on the airship which put special stamps on letters there.
