  • Packt Open Source Awards 2010 announced

Nice! Seems like Packt Publishing once again launched their Open Source awards to support OSS projects out there. The awards are a bit CMS focused with two out of six categories being about content management solutions, but far less so than in previous years thanks to three new categories:

    • E-Commerce applications
    • JavaScript libraries
    • Graphics software

So together with "Hall of Fame CMS", "Open Source CMS" and "Most Promising Open Source Project" there is quite a lot in the pot for the whole community with the winning project in each category receiving $2,500. For more information head over to the PacktPub.com.

Now I just have to come up with a list of projects to nominate myself. There is just too much great stuff out there :D At least I still have some time. The nominations will close on September 17.

  • 2 Years of GitHub

It's unbelievable that it's only been 2 years since GitHub launched. And what has all happened since then... More and more projects are leaving the dark days of centralized systems behind in favour of a more open approach. If you think about it, it's been 5 years since Google Code launched so GitHub is still relatively new but it definitely doesn't feel that way. Back then it was also way more of a revolution than an evolution if you compare it to Google Code vs. Sourceforge.

Nowadays, sites like GitHub and Bitbucket start to feel - at least for me - like the central hub of the opensource community. The place where you find new and interesting projects and where you can easily contribute. And btw.: They even have a podcast ;-)

    Happy birthday, GitHub :D

  • Next Ma.gnolia to be open-source

If you follow the blog on the social bookmarking service Ma.gnolia you probably know that the team behind it is far from being lazy. Every month there is something new. Most of the time it is something that only a couple of people will probably be interested in (like the integration with Gnip or the EAUT+OpenID support added this month), but nonetheless.

But today, they had something way bigger to announce: The next version of Ma.gnolia will be open-source. But this is only part of the story. M2 (as the new version is called) will not only make it possible to install your own little bookmarking service for you and your friends, but it will also be possible to link installations (including Ma.gnolia.com). The whole open development project will launch next month on github. For links to the respective project parts visit ma.gnolia.org.

According to the published charter this move also opens the doors for a whole new business direction: consulting and support regarding custom installations. The whole business this around Ma.gnolia was always a little bit of a mystery to me. Last year there was some talk about finally introducing a pro account, something that never happened. But with M2 all roads are open again. Esp. if you want to sync your own site with Ma.gnolia.com, I can imaging, there might be a new pro account somewhere in there.

Anyway, great move and I can't wait to see what the final infrastructure will look like. I'm esp. curious how the whole federation between multiple services will be handled and esp. with the "root" servers.

  • Google offering project hosting

The first thing I read this morning, was Marshall Kirkpatrick's post on TechCrunch informing the world about Google's new idea of becoming a SourceForge competitor. Since I'm one of those people who experienced quite a lot of problems with SourceForge in the past, I went over there and created a small project (mainly for testing purpose) right away.

The registration of a project is very straight forward. First of all you need to have a Google account (GMail or whatever). After you've logged in, simply hit the "Create a new project" link, give your project a name, short description, description and license (tags are optional) and you're done.
