  • Pownce export and files

It took a little bit over a week not tonight I finally got my export of my Pownce data, an API-dump of all my posts (or if I want all my posts combined with all the posts I've seen from all the other people I've followed). But the dump does not include the actual files uploaded to the service. They are still on their S3 account (or on the server they used prior to using S3) and only the links to those files are included in the export.

  • Bye Bye Pownce

It's always sad to see services that you actually really liked going the way of the dodo. It just happened a few days ago with Stikkit and now it's Pownce's time to leave the net. I personally never found a real use-case for me with Pownce but I always liked the service nonetheless for it's quite unique approach to social messaging. Now that Leah and Mike move on to SixApart, Pownce will be shut down (but at least with a 14 days time-period for getting your data out of it).

What I don't get about this whole move is, that why SixApart is hiring both of them. From what I've gathered, SixApart seems to me like a pure Perl-shop while Pownce was (and for the next 2 weeks still is) a pure Django application. It's also definitely sad to see one of the biggest (or least most popular) Django sites go down.

Anyway: Big thanks to Leah and Mike for Pownce and good luck with SixApart :-) (Perhaps you can teach them some serious programming language over there ;-) j/k). The whole story has one positive aspect, though: I finally can focus exclusively on Twitter for social messaging ;-)

  • Pownce Desktop 2.0 alpha released

Pownce released last night the first alpha of their new desktop client. The previous, at least for me, had become unusable due to login problem and such, so I'm quite happy that there is finally an official -- yet still alpha -- replacement.

This new version thankfully comes with a simplified style and also embeds content like YouTube movies and the like instead of requiring users to once again go to the actual website. The client still uses Adobe AIR and is therefor available on Windows, MacOSX and Linux.

  • New Pownce.app on the horizon?

For the last month and for some reason I never could log into Pownce using the official Pownce.app anymore. No idea why, but it seems like the App has enough problems to justify a move that I would have never guessed possible: Pownce now suggests more or less officially, that you should use a different app -- and PownceMonkey in particular -- if you're "experiencing substantial bugs".

(Pownce is currently working on a new Pownce app - in the meantime, users experiencing substantial bugs may want to try http://powncemonkey.com )

Big props for admitting that there are indeed tons of problems with the current app. Now I just hope, that the new app will offer such nice things like content preview and such :D For instance I'm still not really convinced that AIR is a good solution for stuff like that. First of all it still doesn't offer the look&feel of a native application and only in really rare cases it offers all the functionality the actual website -- it's supposed be a frontend for -- has. A small docklet that just shows me that there is new content would be much more interesting to me which just keeps me up to date and gives me some notification when someone posts something new.

While I'm at it: This would be really nice for FriendFeed too ;-)

  • Public sharing and more Megs on Pownce

Wow, Pownce just announced 2 huges changes to their service:

    1. You can now also post files to the public instead of just being able to share links, events and messages with the world.
    2. The filesize limit has been raised to 100 MB for normal users and 250 MB for pro users.

For me personally, this is really great, esp. since the new upload limit finally moves Pownce beyond sharing content via e-mail. I'm not so sure, though, about the whole public sharing thing. I guess only time will tell if people will be stupid enough to start sharing material copyrighted by others with the public (stupid because you have to have an account there to share stuff ;-)). Anyway, I really hope this works out for Pownce.

And for myself I hope I can convince some of my colleges to join. This would make sharing links and the usual funny stuff much more convenient ;-)

  • New stuff on Pownce

Today Pownce made quite a bunch of updates to its service according to an e-mail sent to all members. First of all, there are now even more previews available like for instance the new Flickr video service or Viddler.

    • More videos and photos will show up right in your notes! Supported photo and video sites include YouTube, Flickr, Vimeo, CollegeHumor, Zooomr, Photobucket, Ustream.tv, Viddler, Qik, Google video, Metacafe, Revver, and Viddyou. Whew!

Then there is now finally a feed button showing up in your browser when you access your profile.

  • Pownce: Friends gone?

I guess Pownce is one of those apps out there where you really notice that it's in some kind of private testing for a reason ...
