Ok, I guess this means now the end of a good month playing _Ratchet & Clank_ games. Tonight I now finished the unofficial 4th part of the series: "Ratchet: Gladiator" (German title).

Unofficial simply because this isn't really a platformer-shooter like the first 3 titles are, but more ... a shooter ;-) Short story short: Ratchet, Clank and Al are kidnapped by an entertainment mogul and Ratchet is forced to participate in arena fights. These fights go from normal arena matches to challenges known from RC3 where you basically have to reach certain checkpoints of kill a boss.

While this might sound boring if it's all the game has to offer, this was actually not the case. Insomniac managed to rotate the challenges well and so kept the game throughout entertaining. There are also some challenges, where you have to use a hoverbike, hovercraft, land stalker etc. Nothing special, but it keeps the game fresh.

  • Ratchet & Clank 2 - Day 9

Done :D Finishing the game wasn't really hard after upgrading the shield and the Heavy Bouncer. I guess it took about 3 minutes to finish the final boss. After surviving the outro I got the choice between moving back in time before I bet the boss or restarting the game in a challenge mode where all my weapons are still there and every bolt I get is multi-folded. Well ;-) I guess I will still spend some time in the challenge mode to upgrade every weapon and then move along to R&C3 :D

  • Ratchet & Clank 2 - Day 8

Today I finally did the Glider level on Grelbin and also got the 16 moon crystals for the Zenmaster to get the first part of the Hypnomatic ... Strange, there are still 2 parts left and I had no idea, where to go until I noticed, that I hadn't really finished the missions on Planet Smolg ;-) So I went back there and inspected the docked ships to get the coordinates of Damosel.

Fighting the Protopets there actually seems like a good way to upgrade weapons, health and fill your purse with bolts :D

After finishing off that whole army of protopets I went to the railways to get one of the missing Hypnomatic parts. When I got it, an info box appeared telling me, that I now had all the missing parts and could go searching for someone to put them all together. Hmm.... 2 out of 3 equals all? Seems like the scripted events in this game are really a little bit strange ;-)

  • Ratchet & Clank 2 - Day 7

It might be strange to start a dairy at the 7th page, but I was somehow motivated ;) I think I'm already fairly far in the game so I will also use these posts to review some parts of it.

So far I've finished off the gang leader in his shiny mech and now I should be off to meet with that spy girl on Greblin, where I arrived yesterday. It's actually quite nice there ... quite a lot of bears though. Strong bears, cute bears, bears messing with dragons ... ey *g* Anyway, it looks like kind of a repetition to the desert area where you could quite easily level up your weapons and in general. Seems to be the case here as well, but only a couple of weapons seem to be useful here. These would be the Minirocket Tube where you need 3 shots per bear and I think 5 for the dragon. And there is the Bouncer, which is in my opinion the most effective weapon against the bears. One shot that detonates directly on it, will most of the time hold if off enough to let the minibombs to their work :D

  • Let the Ratchet & Clank weekend begin :D

Yesterday I got Ratchet & Clank 2 and Ratchet: Gladiator and I really love R&C2 so far. It's just like the first game but with better graphics, upgradable weapons and more.

There's just one little thing, that annoys the hell out of me: Remember those info screens that appear in some kind of tutorial fashion to introduce you to special button combos and so on? Well, they now seem to appear whenever you reach a certain location when first playing a level through. No matter if you've been there before or not. Not really a big thing, but still annoying in my opinion esp. since this behaviour seems to be new in R&C2. At least, I can't remember noticing it in the first game of the series.

  • Lessons learnt yesterday

    1. If you pay lots of money for a gun in a game, better use it. For the last year or so I was avoiding finishing Ratchet & Clank for the PS2, because I always died in the last stage and got reset to somewhere right after the start. A few months before that happened for the first time, I played it quite a lot to get these 1.000.000 credits to get the super weapon in that game: The R.I.D.A. ... just to never use it. Yesterday I used it for the first time, and finally finished the game. Hurrayyy. Next.
    2. Trust Apple to surprise you. Well. To make a long story short: I love the new Core2Duo iMacs ;-) The specs look really great and I can't wait to get some money to get myself one of them for my birthday in 2 months ;)
