During my recent trip to Vancouver I noticed something that I’ve come to really love in Portland, Oregon: It is pretty much expected of you that you greet your bus driver when entering and thank them when leaving.
It’s such a small gesture but it changes the whole feeling inside the vehicle to the better. Ever since my first trip to Portland I’ve tried to greet more and just be a more friendly person when using public transportation.
Here for instance the Austrian Railways has to have campaigns to make people aware that shouting and attacking staff is not acceptable… In Germany a DB employee has recently been killed!
I’m pretty sure that me greeting public transportation staff won’t change the world here, but perhaps it will at least bring a smile to their face and calm someone else down…
