Steve Jobs did it again and announced a device, many people think will change the world. Well, I for one am still wondering what kind of use I might have for it. A few years ago while still working at University projects I had the chance to play around a little bit with a tablet PC running Windows XP and it was barely usable for what I wanted to do with it. Granted, Apple has done some miracles with the iPhone user interface, but what would I want to have mostly the same in 9.7" device without any real benefit?

No CrackBook anymore
After some e-mailing problems, 2 days ago I finally received word that the top-case replacement for my nice little white MacBook had arrived in Graz. But I'm in Klagenfurt and don't have a car, so why Graz? Simple. In Graz is the nearest certified Apple service provider for me and I don't really have the time to sent my MacBook to Apple (I guess all the way over to Amsterdam) and then sit on my hands waiting for it to return within a couple of weeks.
So yesterday I took the first bus -- that is the first in what I consider as morning compared to "night" -- and only 2.5 hours later I was standing in the offices of nc digitalis. If you ever get there, don't expect a storefront. It's basically just a small office within something that, I guess, previously was an apartment build in the early 1900s. Just ignore that if you don't like it ;-) I was just really happy with the service. Within 15 minutes I had my MacBook again with a shiny new top-case (and a clean keyboard :-P ). And the best part: It was all done under warranty. Just great service :D

What's so new about Apple's new patent?
Read more about "What's so new about Apple's new patent?" ...
Details about a patent filed by Apple last September just surfaced and after looking just shortly at the article on appleinsider I have to wonder what's really that new about a touch-less touchscreen. Some kind of touch-less interaction was - if I remember correctly - already possible with the stylus of the MotionComputing tablet PCs (sorry for the fuzzy link, but the site seems to be off-line or something). There you could use a button on the stylus to create the same reaction on the touch screen as actual "clicking" on the screen. So there had to be some kind of passive sensor in place on the tablet PC.

Mail.app as alternative to Thunderbird?
Read more about "Mail.app as alternative to Thunderbird?" ...
For the last couple of days (actually since I noticed, that Mail.app is now finally able to work with Socks5 proxies) I started considering Apple's Mail.app as an alternative for Mozilla Thunderbird for my daily mail usage.

First hours with Safari 4
Today Apple released the first the first public beta of Safari 4. As a very curious person I, naturally, had to already give it a try :-) Since I'm still using Webkit in the background, I can't really say anything about the version of the rendering engine; so I will focus on the GUI changes here. So far I really like it. Sure there are a few smaller issues and tons of stuff that I have to get used to, but overall Safari 4 looks like a good evolution.

Has Apple changed education customer policy?
I just went over to Apple's online store to see how much Apple would want from me for one of those new MacBookPros with Core 2 Duos. Right before entering my credentials identifying myself as a student I noticed a shift in the amount of products you're allowed to use that discount for per year. It seems like only one desktop machine and one notebook is allowed anymore. But at least I could buy up to 2 displays ...

Coke+iTunes
According to futurezone Apple and CocaCola have now joined forces and will open a new music store based on iTunes on August 9. What I don't understand here is the "why". Will Cokemusic offer different songs? Will I get a free coke for every 4th song I buy there? Or is this just a different frontend for iTunes with some Coke branding?
Well, at least it's another chance to get free music ... would at least be something new for me since iTunes doesn't give away stuff in Austria. Now I'm really curious what will be there on the 9th.

Apple exchanged iBook/PowerBook batteries
Seems like Dell wasn't Sony's only customer. Yesterday Apple too started an exchange program for batteries sold between October 2003 and August 2006 ... and guess who has one of the affected batteries :-?
After noticing this yesterday night thanks to this article on Golem I went right away to order a replacement, but somehow the form didn't accept my battery's serial number. Well, seems like the server had just too much load because now it finally seems to work :-) Let's see, how long it will take Apple this time to ship the new battery.

Lessons learnt yesterday
- If you pay lots of money for a gun in a game, better use it. For the last year or so I was avoiding finishing Ratchet & Clank for the PS2, because I always died in the last stage and got reset to somewhere right after the start. A few months before that happened for the first time, I played it quite a lot to get these 1.000.000 credits to get the super weapon in that game: The R.I.D.A. ... just to never use it. Yesterday I used it for the first time, and finally finished the game. Hurrayyy. Next.
- Trust Apple to surprise you. Well. To make a long story short: I love the new Core2Duo iMacs ;-) The specs look really great and I can't wait to get some money to get myself one of them for my birthday in 2 months ;)
